Brake Inspections & Repair

Understanding Your Car’s Brake System

Your brakes are one of the most critical safety components in your vehicle. At TJ's Automotive, we believe it’s important for every driver to understand how their brake system works and when it might need service. Staying informed can help you catch issues early, prevent costly damage, and most importantly, keep you safe on the road.

How Does a Car’s Brake System Work?

Your vehicle’s brake system uses hydraulic pressure to slow and stop your car when you press the brake pedal. Here’s a basic overview of how it works:

  • Brake Pedal: Pressing the pedal activates the master cylinder, which sends brake fluid through the brake lines.

  • Brake Calipers: The pressurized fluid causes the calipers to squeeze the brake pads against the rotors.

  • Brake Pads & Rotors: The friction between the pads and rotors slows the wheels down, bringing the vehicle to a stop.

  • Drum Brakes (on some vehicles): In some rear systems, shoes press outward against a drum instead of using calipers and rotors.

All components must be in good condition and properly maintained for your brakes to perform effectively.

Why Are My Brakes Squeaking, Grinding, or Feeling Soft?

Brake problems often give off early warning signs. If you notice any of the following, it’s time to have your brakes inspected:

  • Squeaking or Grinding Sounds: This often indicates worn out brake pads or damaged rotors.

  • Soft or Spongy Pedal: Could be a sign of air in the brake lines or low brake fluid.

  • Vibrations While Braking: Warped rotors can cause a noticeable vibration or pulsing in the brake pedal.

  • Brake Warning Light: If the brake light on your dashboard turns on, don't ignore it—it could signal a serious issue.

  • Longer Stopping Distance: If your vehicle takes longer to stop than usual, your brakes may be wearing down.
